Himayat Sagar water level rises amid heavy inflows

Himayat Sagar water level nears full capacity

Hyderabad: The Water Board has advised government agencies and residents in downstream areas to remain alert as the Himayat Sagar water level continued to rise following heavy rainfall in the catchment region over the past two days.

Officials said increased inflows into Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar, the twin reservoirs supplying water to Hyderabad, have led to a steady rise in water storage levels. Around 400 cusecs of floodwater entered Himayat Sagar, contributing to the increase.

The Water Board warned that reservoir gates could be opened and excess water released if inflows continue to rise. As a precaution, disaster management authorities and other government departments have been asked to stay prepared for any emergency response.

The Himayat Sagar water level reached 1,761.15 feet against its full reservoir level of 1,763.50 feet. The reservoir is therefore approaching its maximum storage capacity.

Heavy rainfall across the catchment areas of both reservoirs significantly boosted inflows during the past 48 hours. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and assessing water levels at regular intervals.

Meanwhile, Osman Sagar also recorded an increase in storage. The reservoir’s water level rose to 1,784.35 feet against its full reservoir level of 1,790 feet.

Officials said there is no immediate cause for alarm. However, they urged residents living downstream of the reservoirs to remain vigilant as a precautionary measure. Further decisions regarding the release of floodwater will depend on inflow trends and reservoir storage levels over the coming days.
