Roblox Age-Based Accounts Boost Safety for Kids
Hyderabad: Roblox Corporation has introduced Roblox Age-Based Accounts, a new system designed to enhance safety and personalise user experiences for players under 16.
Announced from San Mateo, California, the update includes two new account types—Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select for ages 9 to 15. These accounts will roll out in early June and are structured to align content access, communication settings, and parental controls with users’ age groups.
Roblox Age-Based Accounts introduce structured content access and communication safeguards
The new framework integrates age-check systems, content ratings, moderation, and parental controls into a unified structure. Roblox stated that users under 16 who complete age verification will continue to access a majority of games available on the platform.
For younger users aged 5 to 8, Roblox Kids accounts will restrict access to games rated Minimal or Mild. Communication features will remain disabled by default. Meanwhile, Roblox Select accounts for ages 9 to 15 will allow access to games rated up to Moderate, with default communication settings unchanged.
Additionally, the system automatically progresses users as they grow older. Users transition to Roblox Select accounts at age 9 and to standard accounts at age 16.
The company also emphasised its continuous evaluation process for games, which includes developer verification, real-time monitoring, and content rating. Furthermore, it confirmed plans to adopt the International Age Rating Coalition framework later this year.
Expanded parental controls form a key part of the update. Parents will be able to block specific games, manage chat settings, and approve access to restricted content.
Commenting on the update, Matt Kaufman said the changes aim to align platform experiences with user age. Meanwhile, Larry Magid noted that the update sets a higher standard for protecting younger users.
