Supreme Court suit planned in Polavaram-Nallamala Sagar dispute
Hyderabad: Telangana has decided to file a civil suit in the Supreme Court of India against Andhra Pradesh. The suit will challenge the proposed diversion of flood waters under the Polavaram-Nallamala Sagar link project. This move marks a sharper phase in the ongoing inter-state water dispute.
Earlier, the apex court advised Telangana to pursue the matter through a civil suit. The court said this route would allow detailed examination of technical data, agreements, and inter-state obligations linked to the Godavari River.

Meanwhile, State Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the civil suit would help Telangana present wider arguments. He asserted that the government would firmly protect the state’s water rights. He also warned that unchecked diversion could harm downstream regions.
During earlier hearings, the Supreme Court noted that civil suits suit disputes involving multiple states and complex records. Acting on this guidance, Telangana withdrew its writ petition. The state has now begun preparing the civil suit before the same bench.
Finally, officials reiterated that any project affecting Godavari waters must strictly follow established inter-state agreements. They stressed that Telangana would pursue all legal options to safeguard its interests.
