GHMC to conduct mega e-waste sanitation drive across city on January 12 and 13
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will conduct a mega e-waste sanitation drive across all 300 wards on January 12 and 13. The drive forms part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, GHMC Commissioner R. V. Karnan said on Saturday.
Two-day drive to promote safe e-waste disposal
While announcing the initiative, Karnan said the drive will focus on public awareness and proper disposal. He added that GHMC aims to ensure systematic collection and scientific processing of electronic waste from homes, shops, and public places.
During the two-day programme, teams will collect a wide range of electronic items. These include refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, computers, mobile phones, televisions, batteries, UPS units, and power banks.
Awareness campaigns underway
Meanwhile, GHMC has already begun awareness efforts. From Friday onwards, sanitation staff, Resident Welfare Associations, NGOs, and women from self-help groups have started outreach campaigns in neighbourhoods.
In addition, GHMC has identified temporary e-waste collection centres in every ward. These centres will help residents dispose of electronic waste easily during the drive.
Officials asked to ensure coordination
Furthermore, Commissioner Karnan directed Zonal Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and sanitation officials to coordinate closely. He asked them to ensure smooth execution across all zones.
At the same time, GHMC has intensified publicity to boost participation. Officials are using public address systems for field-level awareness programmes in all circles. These campaigns explain the importance of proper e-waste disposal and provide details about the drive.
Finally, GHMC officials said the initiative will significantly improve e-waste collection. They added that it will also reduce illegal dumping of electronic waste within city limits.
