Hands off Secunderabad: citizens oppose move to dilute historic identity
Hyderabad: Strong opposition has emerged under the banner “Hands off Secunderabad”, as citizens and civic voices warned against any attempt to dilute the city’s historic identity in the name of administrative reorganisation.
Calling Secunderabad more than a pin code or a bureaucratic block, the appeal described it as a living city with a 200-year-old history. Founded in 1806, Secunderabad evolved with its own culture, civic life, and public spirit. Moreover, it stood shoulder to shoulder with Hyderabad as a proud twin city.
The appeal argued that reducing Secunderabad to an administrative line on a map erases generations of shared memory. It said any move to merge or erase its name under the guise of “restructuring” amounts to cultural destruction, not governance.
Citizens stressed that administrative convenience cannot justify wiping out historical roots. Instead, they said Secunderabad’s identity predates many modern cities and deserves protection and respect.
“Hands off Secunderabad” call rejects forced administrative merger
The statement strongly objected to proposals that could subsume Secunderabad under another municipal structure linked to neighbouring regions. It described such moves as unilateral and undemocratic.
Further, the appeal warned that redrawing boundaries to absorb historic Secunderabad into a different administrative unit reflects an abuse of authority. It asserted that electoral success elsewhere does not grant the right to alter Secunderabad’s civic existence.
Reiterating pride in the city’s legacy, citizens called for safeguarding Secunderabad’s name, culture, and identity. Finally, the message demanded that authorities protect the city’s unique character and refrain from any attempt to dilute its existence.
