Replacing MGNREGA is ideological rebranding, says Srikanth
Hyderabad: BC Finance Corporation Chairman Nuthi Srikanth Goud accused the BJP-led NDA government of rewriting India’s welfare history. He said the government used its parliamentary majority to replace MGNREGA with a new employment mission.
According to Srikanth Goud, the VB-G RAM G Bill, 2025, marks a clear shift away from rights-based welfare. He said the move removes the legal guarantee that allowed rural workers to demand employment from the State.
Replacing MGNREGA shifts control from workers to the State
While the new scheme offers 125 days of work, Srikanth Goud said the government now controls when and where jobs are provided. He criticised the revised funding pattern and warned that States would bear extra financial pressure without adequate support.
He also raised concerns about digital monitoring in areas with poor connectivity and low literacy. Seasonal pauses, he said, could cut off income for vulnerable workers. Finally, he argued that renaming Congress-era schemes reflects ideological erasure rather than meaningful reform.
