KTR challenges government decisions tied to GHMC ULB Merger

GHMC ULB Merger

Hyderabad: KTR accused the government of pushing the GHMC ULB Merger to serve private interests. According to him, the plan marks a break from earlier decentralised policies. He also said previous administrations prioritised public needs. In contrast, the new approach, he argued, centres on land control and exposes citizens to future risks.

Public interest concerns rise over the GHMC ULB Merger

Moving to land use concerns, KTR said the government appears willing to divert industrial lands. Earlier governments secured these parcels for long-term public requirements, he noted. Now, however, he believes the same lands are moving towards apartment and mall approvals. He questioned whether industrial zones should shift to residential use and asked the government to clarify its intent.

Turning to procedure, KTR criticised the merger process for lacking transparency. No municipal council adopted a resolution, he said. In addition, he pointed out that the public had no platform to express views. Bypassing the legislature, in his opinion, weakens democratic standards. He warned that such decision-making practices set a worrying precedent.

He then highlighted the scale of the issue. Earlier administrations acquired 9,300 acres for industrial development, he said, and those lands must remain tied to their original purpose. Allowing private entities to benefit from land-use changes creates imbalance, he argued. He also said the shift disrupts previous policies that aimed to reduce pollution through planned industrial relocations. Moreover, he warned that land sales could drain public resources and slow future development.

In his concluding remarks, KTR demanded that the government reverse the merger decision. The BRS, he said, will continue its protests until authorities address their concerns. He maintained that public lands must not turn into speculative assets and stressed that citizens deserve transparent governance.
