DCA warns against misuse of Semaglutide in Telangana
Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) issued a Semaglutide misuse warning in Telangana, directing the public to use the drug strictly under medical supervision and only with a valid prescription.
Officials said Semaglutide, commonly used for weight loss and Type-2 diabetes, is a prescription-only medicine. It must be taken only under the guidance of specialists such as endocrinologists, internal medicine experts or cardiologists for approved indications.
The DCA cautioned that self-medication could lead to serious complications. These include acute pancreatitis, kidney injury, severe gastrointestinal reactions and gallbladder disease. Authorities stressed that improper usage without clinical monitoring increases health risks significantly.
The advisory also warned against purchasing the drug from unregulated online platforms or unauthorised sellers. Officials said such products may be spurious, substandard or unsafe, posing additional risks to consumers.
Semaglutide misuse warning highlights strict enforcement measures
As part of the Semaglutide misuse warning, the DCA prohibited manufacturers from promoting the drug through surrogate advertisements or indirect marketing. Authorities said such promotions could encourage off-label use and mislead consumers.
The department instructed that Semaglutide should be purchased only from licensed medical shops upon submission of a valid prescription. It added that strict enforcement measures would be taken against violations.
Officials urged the public to consult qualified medical professionals before starting any new treatment. They emphasised that responsible usage is essential to prevent adverse health outcomes.
The DCA reiterated that patient safety remains a priority and called for awareness regarding the risks associated with unsupervised use of prescription medicines.
