Khammam bus accident: School bus plunges into canal

Hyderabad: More than 40 students suffered injuries in a Khammam bus accident on Friday evening after a school bus carrying nearly 100 children plunged into a canal near Ganeshpadu village in Penuballi mandal, police said.

The bus was returning after dropping students of Vivekananda Vidyalaya from Maddulagudem village in Vemsur mandal. It had planned stops at Ganeshpadu, LS Banjar, KM Banjar, Marlakunta and Muthugudem villages. However, eyewitnesses said the driver sped along the outskirts of Ganeshpadu village. As a result, he lost control, and the bus overturned into a roadside canal.

Immediately after the accident, villagers heard loud screams from inside the bus. Soon after, locals rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations even before police arrived. Meanwhile, panic spread quickly, and parents rushed to the accident site after receiving information about the incident.

Khammam bus accident: Minister orders better treatment for injured students

Soon after the mishap, police from the VM Banjar station reached the scene and took charge of rescue efforts with help from local residents. Authorities shifted the injured students to private hospitals in Penuballi and Thiruvur in Andhra Pradesh’s NTR district for treatment. Officials said several students sustained serious injuries.

Following the incident, Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao spoke to the Sub-Collector and the ACP over the phone and reviewed the situation. He directed officials to ensure prompt and proper medical treatment for all injured students without any lapses.

Meanwhile, police said they will conduct a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Authorities also said they will take action against those found responsible. The incident created tension in and around Ganeshpadu village, as locals demanded stricter safety measures for school buses.
