Secunderabad Railway Police bust interstate ganja smuggling racket
Hyderabad: Secunderabad Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) busted an interstate ganja smuggling racket and arrested an Odisha-based man who was allegedly transporting 6.096 kg of ganja to Hyderabad. Police seized the contraband, valued at ₹3,04,800, during a joint surprise checking operation at Charlapally Railway Station.
The accused was identified as Antaryani Mahananda, 23, a painter from Rourkela town in Sundargarh district of Odisha. A case was registered under Crime No. 388/2026 under Sections 8(c) read with 20(b)(ii)(B) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
According to the police, the accused planned to travel to Hyderabad on the advice of his cousin in search of employment. However, he allegedly decided to earn quick money by selling ganja after learning that the drug fetched higher prices in Hyderabad.
Police said he travelled to a forest area in Rayagada on July 26, where he allegedly purchased around 6 kg of ganja from an unidentified person for ₹5,000 per kg. He packed the contraband into two shoulder bags and boarded Train No. 20809 Nagavali Express from Kesinga Railway Station.
Interstate ganja smuggling operation intercepted at Charlapally
On the morning of July 27, the accused got down at Charlapally Railway Station and waited in the waiting hall for his cousin. During a joint checking drive conducted by GRP Secunderabad and the RPF at around 1.30 pm, police intercepted and searched him. Officers recovered 6.096 kg of ganja from his possession and took him into custody.
The operation was carried out by teams led by Inspector of Railway Police B. Saieashwar Goud, Inspector S.V. Subba Reddy and RPF officers under the supervision of Superintendent of Railway Police Y. Sai Shekhar, IPS, and DSRP S.N. Jawed. IGP, Railway and Road Safety, K. Ramesh Naidu, IPS, appreciated the officers involved in the operation and announced that they would be suitably rewarded.
