Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 faces fresh delays over committee reviews

Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 delayed by new review

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 has encountered fresh delays after the Centre appointed another committee to examine project-related issues, extending uncertainty over the expansion of the city’s mass transit network.

The latest development comes amid growing concerns over traffic congestion in Hyderabad and expectations for rapid expansion of metro services. The Centre has entrusted SBI Caps with assessing Metro assets and preparing a report that will be used for future financial and policy decisions.

According to stakeholders, the project has spent nearly two-and-a-half years undergoing studies, route reviews, committee examinations and revisions to project reports. Critics argue that these processes have slowed progress on a project considered vital for the city’s transportation needs.

The state government has proposed expanding the Metro network by nearly 120 kilometres at an estimated cost of Rs 45,000 crore. The proposed corridors include connections to Shamshabad Airport, the Outer Ring Road corridor, LB Nagar-Hayatnagar, Miyapur-Patancheru and northern parts of the city.

However, several key issues remain unresolved. Land acquisition for the Old City Metro corridor has yet to be completed, while discussions regarding the future of Metro operations and infrastructure continue between various agencies and governments.

SBI Caps review adds uncertainty to Hyderabad Metro Phase 2

The Centre has directed SBI Caps to reassess Metro assets and submit a report within the next five to six months. Officials indicated that decisions regarding funding and loan approvals would be based on the findings of this assessment.

Public associations and members of the Metro Sadhana Samiti have criticised the repeated appointment of committees. They argued that delays in decision-making are affecting public transport improvements and postponing benefits for commuters.

Representatives of these groups warned that further postponement of Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 could adversely impact mobility in a rapidly growing city. They urged authorities to expedite approvals and move the project towards implementation.

Meanwhile, a roundtable meeting titled “Hyderabad Metro Rail – Facts, Public Interest, Environmental Consequences” is scheduled to be held on Wednesday at the Basheerbagh Press Club. Participants are expected to discuss Metro ridership, financial viability, expansion plans, affordability, safety standards, RTC connectivity, last-mile connectivity and environmental benefits.
