Telangana EV policy push gains momentum with Secretariat inspection
Hyderabad: Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the Telangana EV policy was designed to prevent Hyderabad from facing pollution levels similar to Delhi, as senior officials inspected electric vehicles at the Secretariat to promote adoption among government employees.
Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, DGP Shivadhar Reddy and Information and Public Relations Commissioner Ch Priyanka, along with employee union leaders, participated in the inspection drive. The Chief Secretary also opted for an electric vehicle, setting a precedent for officials.
The minister said the Telangana EV policy offers incentives such as zero road tax and zero registration charges. He added that the government was forgoing nearly ₹1000 crore in revenue to encourage a shift towards clean mobility. As a result, electric vehicle usage has increased across the state.
Further, manufacturers were asked to extend special discounts for government employees. Companies are offering price reductions between 10 and 20 percent. Departments were also directed to prioritise EVs for official use through purchase or hiring.
Telangana EV policy expands charging network and adoption measures
To support the Telangana EV policy, the government is expanding charging infrastructure across the state. Firms such as Mahindra Electric, Ather Energy, Gravton Motors and Ola Electric are participating, while REDCO is facilitating charging station development.
Electric buses are being introduced in CURE areas. Diesel autos will be converted into EVs through retrofitting. Vehicles older than 15 years are being phased out under the scrappage policy. Telangana has also been integrated with the Vahan portal, allowing vehicle registration at showrooms.
The government is facilitating loans for EV purchases through public representatives. Senior officials and employee union leaders have already begun booking EVs to encourage wider adoption.
Ramakrishna Rao said a plan covering 2000 km under CURE initiatives was being implemented. He noted that nearly 30 percent of the state’s population lives in Hyderabad, making air quality a priority. He urged employees to adopt EVs and help expand the Telangana EV policy’s reach.
The government reiterated that large-scale adoption of electric vehicles remains key to achieving a clean, green and sustainable Telangana.
