Hyderabad Police seize Chinese manja worth ₹43 lakh in four-day drive

Chinese manja seizure: Hyderabad Police intensify crackdown

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police seized banned Chinese manja worth ₹43 lakh across the city during a special enforcement drive conducted over four days, from January 8 to January 11, and arrested 57 people for illegal sale and distribution.

Police registered 29 cases during the period and confiscated 2,150 bobbins of the prohibited kite string. Officials said the drive was intensified ahead of Sankranti due to the serious risk Chinese manja poses to the environment, birds, and human life.

The banned manja, made with sharp synthetic materials, has been linked to fatal accidents and injuries in previous years. Therefore, officers carried out inspections across residential areas, markets, and known supply points to curb its circulation.

Wider Chinese manja seizure shows scale of illegal trade

In the past one month alone, police booked 132 cases related to Chinese manja seizure and recovered 8,376 bobbins valued at ₹1.68 crore. During this period, officers arrested a total of 200 people involved in selling the prohibited string.

Police warned that strict legal action would follow against both sellers and buyers of Chinese manja. Violators face jail terms under applicable laws, officials said, adding that enforcement would continue through the festive season.

Authorities urged citizens to use only safe and approved kite strings and celebrate Sankranti responsibly, without endangering lives or wildlife.
