Harish Rao Mortgages House for Poor Girl’s PG Education

Hyderabad: Former Telangana minister and Siddipet MLA Harish Rao supported a poor medical student by mortgaging his own house to help her pursue postgraduate medical education.

Harish Rao mortgaged his Siddipet residence to a bank to enable a Rs.20 lakh education loan for Mamata, a PG medical student from his constituency.

Mamata, the eldest daughter of Konka Ramachandram, secured a PG medical seat under the government convener quota. However, she faced financial hardship as the annual tuition fee was Rs.7.50 lakh, totalling Rs.22.50 lakh for the three-year course. With the deadline to pay the first instalment on December 18, she risked losing her seat.

Banks declined to sanction an education loan due to the lack of property collateral. At this stage, Mamata and her family approached Harish Rao, who had earlier supported her and her siblings during their MBBS education. He immediately agreed to help and mortgaged his house, ensuring timely sanction of the loan.

Apart from facilitating the loan, Harish Rao also gave Rs.1 lakh for Mamata’s hostel expenses. Earlier, he had extended financial assistance to all four siblings for their MBBS studies.

Mamata said she had been anxious about losing her PG seat due to financial constraints. Her father, Konka Ramachandram, said Harish Rao’s help was an unrepayable debt and clarified that the family had no personal or political association with him beyond being residents of the Siddipet constituency.
