Yadadri Thermal Power Plant Unit-4 achieves COD milestone

Yadadri Thermal Power Unit-4 achieves COD successfully

Hyderabad: The Yadadri Thermal Power Plant reached a major milestone after Unit-4 achieved its Commercial Operation Date (COD). The unit added 800 MW to the state’s power capacity.

The TG Genco announced that Unit-4 ran continuously for 72 hours without technical issues. During this period, the unit generated 58 million units of power. The target stood at 57.6 million units.

Although the rated capacity is 800 MW, the unit reached a peak output of 825 MW. As a result, total power availability from the project rose to 2,400 MW.

The COD process began at 3.30 pm on the 5th of the month. It concluded at 3.30 pm on Thursday.

The plant has five units, each with a capacity of 800 MW. Two Stage-1 units are already operational. With Unit-4 completing COD, Stage-2 operations have also begun.

Meanwhile, officials said preparations are in progress for Unit-3 COD next month. They expect Unit-5 to take another three months.

Power capacity strengthens further

Officials said the Unit-4 COD has strengthened Telangana’s power security. Once all five units operate, the plant will generate 4,000 MW.

The project is located in Damaracharla mandal. The government estimated the cost at ₹35,000 crore. Despite Covid-19 disruptions, authorities completed construction in phases.

Former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao laid the foundation to make the state power self-reliant. Leaders from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi welcomed the achievement.

Finally, officials said the state will reduce external power purchases further once the remaining units begin commercial operations.
