Scrub typhus kills five in Andhra Pradesh, health alert issued
Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh health authorities have issued an alert after scrub typhus claimed five lives across multiple districts, sparking public concern over the disease’s spread.
According to the state health department, deaths have been reported in Vizianagaram, Palnadu, Bapatla, and Nellore districts. Several other patients remain under treatment at both government and private hospitals.
Medical experts say scrub typhus is transmitted through the bite of mites commonly found in grassy or bushy areas. The infection causes high fever, severe body pain, headaches, weakness, and red rashes on the skin.
Doctors warn that delays in treatment and ignoring early symptoms have contributed to the rise in fatalities. They have advised the public to get tested immediately if they experience fever or any suspicious symptoms and seek hospital care without delay.
State boosts hospital preparedness amid scrub typhus scare
In response, the state government has directed hospitals to stay on high alert. All healthcare centres have been instructed to ensure the availability of essential medicines and testing kits. Officials have also ordered the creation of dedicated wards for treating scrub typhus cases.
The health department urged the public to avoid entering grassy or forested areas unnecessarily and to remain vigilant. It further advised against neglecting any signs of illness, especially during the current season.
