Revanth Reddy Facing Backlash from BRS over Muslim Cabinet Post
Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) senior leader Shaik Abdullah Sohail accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of misleading the Muslim community by inducting former cricketer Md Azharuddin into the State cabinet. He said the move was an act of political tokenism aimed at easing pressure ahead of the Jubilee Hills by-election.
“Revanth Reddy believes one symbolic cabinet post can erase two years of neglect and broken promises,” Sohail said, adding that the community had been denied representation for 23 months. “Now, the same Chief Minister expects praise for correcting his own exclusion,” he said.
According to Sohail, the timing of Azharuddin’s induction, even as the Model Code of Conduct remained in effect, exposed the Congress government’s fear of electoral defeat. “This has never happened in Telangana politics. The party reacted not to appeals but to panic,” he remarked.
BRS says Revanth Reddy acted under fear of Jubilee Hills bypoll defeat.
Sohail said Revanth Reddy was attempting to project the inclusion of Azharuddin as a gesture of goodwill. “Representation is a right, not a favour. Instead of apologising, the Chief Minister is celebrating his mistake,” he said.
He reminded that Revanth had earlier defended the absence of Muslim ministers by claiming there were no Muslim MLAs or MLCs. “When Amer Ali Khan was MLC, he was overlooked. Now, without any Muslim MLA or MLC, Azharuddin is chosen. What changed? Only political fear,” Sohail added.
Calling the decision “too little, too late,” Sohail said the government had ignored all commitments under its Minorities Declaration. He pointed out that not a single rupee had reached the beneficiaries of promised welfare schemes.
“The Revanth Reddy government thrives on optics. Its budgets show allocations, but the ground shows inaction,” Sohail said. He urged Jubilee Hills voters to reject the Congress, arguing that the community deserved respect, not symbolism.
