Hyderabad DCC President accuses BJP-led NDA Govt over MGNREGA

DCC chief targets NDA over MGNREGA rollback

Hyderabad: Hyderabad District Congress Committee (DCC) president Syed Khalid Saifullah on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led NDA government. He accused it of systematically weakening the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He described the scheme as a vital lifeline for rural India.

Addressing a protest near Babu Ghat, Khalid Saifullah said the Centre’s move to rename and restructure MGNREGA directly attacked the constitutional Right to Work. According to him, the decision aimed to dilute one of the country’s strongest rural welfare programmes.

Meanwhile, the Congress organised the protest as part of its nationwide MGNREGA Bachao Sangram campaign. Senior Congress leader and former PCC president V. Hanumantha Rao attended the protest. Khairatabad DCC president Motha Rohit and several party leaders and workers also participated.

Further, Khalid Saifullah recalled that the Congress-led UPA government enacted the scheme under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He said the Act gave legal backing to the Right to Work. Since its launch, he noted, the programme generated over 180 crore person-days of employment. It also created nearly 10 crore rural assets, including tanks and roads.

Moreover, he said MGNREGA strengthened grassroots democracy and local self-governance. He added that Gram Panchayats used the scheme to plan development based on local needs. During critical periods such as the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, the programme supported millions of poor rural families across India.
