Mega health camp held in Chanchalguda prison

Mega health camp prison initiative in Telangana

Hyderabad: The Telangana government announced quarterly health check-ups in prisons during a mega health camp prison initiative held at Central Prison, Chanchalguda.

Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha said the government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the Prisons Department and the Health Department to institutionalise medical camps in all jails. He stated that comprehensive health screenings will be conducted every three months under the supervision of district medical authorities.

The minister said the camps will include cardiology, blood sugar, blood pressure, ENT, dermatology, gynaecology, and other essential tests. He also assured that prisoners suffering from drug addiction or alcohol dependency will receive treatment at district-level de-addiction centres.

The event was organised under the Praja Palana – Pragati Pranalika programme, marking the rollout of medical camps across all 35 prisons in Telangana. Senior officials from the Health Department, National Health Mission, and Prisons Department attended the programme.

Mega health camp prison plan focuses on inmate care

Director General of Prisons Dr. Soumya Mishra said regular health camps will help in early detection of diseases and timely treatment. She added that linking inmates to de-addiction centres will support rehabilitation and reduce deaths caused by withdrawal symptoms.

Officials said the government will also fill vacancies in prison healthcare, including doctors, pharmacists, and psychiatrists, to strengthen services. The initiative reflects coordination between the Prisons Department, Health Department, and National Health Mission.

Authorities stated that the programme aims to improve healthcare access inside prisons and ensure humane and reform-oriented correctional systems across the state.
