Hyderabad Congress protests hijab incident, targets Nitish
Hyderabad: Hundreds of Congress activists protested near the Charminar on Saturday, demanding a public apology and resignation from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the alleged hijab incident involving a woman doctor in Patna.
Hyderabad Congress demands apology resignation over hijab incident
The Hyderabad District Congress Committee president Syed Khalid Saifullah led the protest. According to him, the act amounted to a grave violation of a woman’s dignity, bodily autonomy, and constitutional rights. As a result, he warned that the agitation would continue until authorities initiated strict action.
While addressing the media, Khalid Saifullah said an apology alone would not meet the demand for accountability. Instead, he insisted that Nitish Kumar must step down from office. Describing the incident as deeply shocking, he said no individual, irrespective of position, had the right to touch a woman or interfere with her attire without consent.
Referring to Article 21 of the Constitution, Khalid said the right to life and personal liberty covered dignity, privacy, and freedom of choice in clothing. However, he criticised the National Commission for Women for its silence in the matter. He said the inaction of the Commission in a case involving a sitting Chief Minister was unacceptable. Therefore, he demanded immediate notice and intervention.
Meanwhile, the protest remained peaceful and disciplined throughout. Congress frontal organisations and civil society groups joined the demonstration. Additionally, Khalid announced a toll-free miss-call campaign to mobilise public pressure. He said democratic resistance would continue until accountability was ensured.
