Four-year-old critically injured by Chinese manja; police warn of strict action
Hyderabad: Police have warned of strict legal action against anyone using banned Chinese manja after a four-year-old boy suffered critical injuries in Jagtial district.
City Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar said police will register cases against kite flyers if Chinese manja causes injury. He added that offenders will face direct responsibility for injuries or deaths linked to the hazardous thread.
The warning followed a serious incident near the SSRC camp in Metpally town of Jagtial district. The boy, identified as Srihas, was playing outside his house when Chinese manja wrapped around his neck and caused severe injuries.
Family members rushed the child to a private hospital in Nizamabad. Doctors performed emergency treatment and placed 20 stitches on his neck. Hospital sources said the child remains in critical condition.
The incident once again exposed the continued sale and use of Chinese manja despite a government ban. Authorities said repeated deaths and injuries have failed to deter offenders.
Police step up enforcement
Addressing the media, Sajjanar said police are monitoring open markets and online platforms to stop the sale of Chinese manja. He said enforcement intensified after recent injury cases.
Within one month, police registered 103 cases and arrested 143 people for selling or using the banned thread. Officials also seized 6,226 bobbins worth ₹1.24 crore under the City Police Commissionerate limits.
Police said the drive will continue and urged parents and citizens to avoid banned kite strings that pose serious risks to children and pedestrians.
