Disqualification Notices issued to 10 BRS MLAs put anti-defection law to test in Telangana

Hyderabad: Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar has issued MLA Disqualification Notices to ten BRS MLAs following a Supreme Court directive. The move comes amid allegations that these legislators defected to the Congress party.
The Supreme Court on July 25 mandated the Speaker to resolve the case within three months. Kumar sought legal advice from the Advocate General and senior lawyers before acting on the directive.
Legal Experts Weigh in on Implications
The ten MLAs who received notices are Kadiam Srihari, D. Nagender, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, Sanjay Kumar, Tellam Venkatrao, Arekapudi Gandhi, Kale Yadaiah, Prakash Goud, Krishna Mohan Reddy, and Mahipal Reddy.
BRS filed petitions seeking their disqualification under the Tenth Schedule, accusing them of abandoning the party’s platform. Some MLAs, however, disputed the claims, saying they never formally joined Congress.
Analysts note that the case will put the anti-defection law to the test in Telangana. The Speaker’s final verdict, after examining the legislators’ responses, will determine whether they retain their seats or are disqualified. The ruling could alter Assembly dynamics significantly.
