Digital payments at toll plazas: New rule effective November 15

Digital payments

Hyderabad: Starting November 15, 2025, toll plazas across India will follow a new rule promoting digital payments at toll plazas. The Government of India has notified the Third Amendment to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.

Vehicles without a valid FASTag will pay double the normal fee if the toll is settled in cash. Those who use UPI will be charged 1.25 times the standard rate. For instance, a ₹100 FASTag toll becomes ₹200 in cash or ₹125 through UPI.

Cash to cost more, UPI to cost less

The new system is designed to encourage digital payments, decongest plazas, and improve user convenience. It also reflects the government’s broader aim to make toll operations transparent and tech-driven.

The amendment supports India’s digital economy goals and reduces dependency on cash. Officials said this policy will enhance the efficiency of toll management while improving commuter experience on National Highways.
