CJI Gavai unfazed as lawyer throws shoe in Supreme Court

CJI Gavai

New Delhi: A hearing before CJI Gavai saw a sudden disruption on Monday. A lawyer tossed a shoe toward the bench, according to advocates in the courtroom. The shoe fell short. Security stepped in at once and detained the lawyer. While leaving, he shouted, “Sanatan ka apmaan nahin sahega Hindustan.”

CJI Gavai urged advocates to continue their arguments. He said he was not bothered by the disturbance. Therefore, the bench resumed business without a break.

CJI Gavai incident leads to immediate license cancelation and suspension

The Supreme Court Bar Association canceled the accused lawyer’s license. He has been identified as Rakesh Kishor Kumar, registered since 2011. Meanwhile, the Bar Council of India suspended him with immediate effect. BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra passed the order, citing a breach of professional conduct rules.

During suspension, he cannot practice. Additionally, BCI will issue a show-cause notice within 15 days. After that, disciplinary proceedings will advance as per procedure. Consequently, the case now moves from incident to inquiry.

SCBA issued a statement of regret. It called the act “wholly inappropriate,” saying it shakes the foundation of mutual respect between the court and the bar. Moreover, it warned that any such conduct harms both the institution and the justice system’s fabric.

The episode also revived discussions on courtroom security and professional ethics. However, the calm tone set by CJI Gavai limited disruption. Furthermore, the quick bar action showed consensus across institutions that decorum matters.

For litigants and counsel, the takeaway is clear. Decorum, discipline, and accountability remain central to court practice. The incident ended quickly; the process now takes over. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court’s docket continues.
