Bharat Bandh Today Disrupts Services Nationwide
Hyderabad: Bharat Bandh Today is being observed across the country following a nationwide call by trade unions and farmers’ associations to oppose decisions of the central government. The bandh is scheduled for February 12, with participation announced by 10 trade unions along with multiple farmers’ groups.
The Congress has extended its support to the nationwide protest. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has issued instructions directing party units in all states to participate in the bandh and protest against central government policies.
As a result, disruptions in public services are likely in several states. Banks, government offices, schools, markets, and transport services may be affected. In areas where protests intensify, police are likely to close schools and colleges as a precautionary measure.

The central government introduced four new labor codes in the past year to replace 29 old labor laws. Trade unions have announced protests against these labor codes, alleging that the new framework will weaken workers’ rights and reduce job security. Labor leaders have criticized the reforms, stating that they could make it easier for employers to terminate employees.
Additionally, unions have expressed dissatisfaction over privatization, low wages, and lack of social security. They have also demanded the withdrawal of several bills and the revival of the Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Scheme.
Farmer groups have alleged that the recent US-India trade deal may result in losses for farmers. Labor leaders stated that allowing American products into the Indian market and reducing tariffs could harm domestic agriculture. Consequently, farmer groups have extended support to the bandh.
While schools and colleges are likely to remain closed in many states, government offices may function on a limited basis. However, emergency services such as hospitals and ambulances will operate as usual. Airports and other essential public services will remain open. Motorists are advised to plan in advance due to possible traffic disruptions caused by protest activities.
