Hyderabad: Timely action by a bank manager and cybercrime police prevented a cyber fraud attempt involving Rs 18 lakh in Nalgonda district. Cybercriminals targeted a retired teacher through a fake “digital arrest” scam and tried to extort money by posing as police officials.

According to officials, cybercriminals targeted Puchkayala Devender Reddy of Nalgonda town after allegedly obtaining a new SIM card in his name without his knowledge. Using the SIM, they called him and falsely claimed that he was involved in drug-related activities in Bengaluru. They accused him of supplying marijuana and threatened legal action.

Later, the fraudsters posed as police officers and warned Devender Reddy of a so-called digital arrest. As a result, they created panic and demanded that he immediately deposit Rs 18 lakh into an account they provided.

Following their instructions, Devender Reddy went to the SBI branch at Prakasam Bazaar to transfer the amount. However, the bank manager became suspicious of the sudden request to deposit such a large sum. Therefore, he immediately alerted the cybercrime police.

Soon after, Cyber Crime DSP Lakshminarayana, SI Vishnu Kumar, and their team rushed to the bank. They examined the call records and contacted the cybercriminals. However, the callers failed to answer questions and quickly switched off their phones.

Police later confirmed that it was a cyber fraud attempt and stopped the transfer of Rs 18 lakh. Meanwhile, DSP Lakshminarayana advised the public to avoid trusting threatening calls and urged victims to report cyber frauds to the toll-free number 1930. District SP Sarath Chandra Pawar congratulated the bank manager and the cybercrime team for their swift and alert response.
