Hyderabad: Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday asserted that Congress remains India’s only secular force and the only party capable of defeating the BJP and empowering minorities.

Speaking at a minority meeting in Yousufguda as part of the Jubilee Hills campaign, he said regional parties like the BRS divide secular votes and indirectly help the BJP.

He said the BRS, like the TDP, weakened itself through opportunistic ties with the BJP. “BRS never protested when minority budgets were cut. It acted as BJP’s silent ally,” he added.

Highlighting Congress initiatives, he said the government launched a ₹4,000 crore Minority Declaration, earmarking ₹1,000 crore in subsidies. In 22 months, 2,200 new engineering seats and new law and pharmacy colleges were approved for minorities.

He reminded that during previous Congress rule, six medical colleges and local body reservations enabled many Muslims to hold office for the first time.

Uttam Kumar Reddy also underlined the Congress legacy of introducing 4% reservation and opposing the Wakf Amendment Act. “Telangana was the first state to officially challenge it,” he said.

At the national level, he said the Congress-created Ministry of Minority Affairs raised budgets 27-fold, while BJP and BRS reduced funding. “They practice convenience politics,” he remarked.

Calling Congress “structurally secular,” he said, “Our ideology is consistent, not seasonal.” Urging voters to support Naveen Yadav, he added, “Every vote for Congress protects secularism and social justice.”
