Telangana High Court refuses to cancel DGP appointment

DGP appointment case

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday refused to cancel the appointment of in-charge Director General of Police Shivdhar Reddy and directed the state government to send the DGP panel list to the Union Public Service Commission within two weeks.

Hearing a petition challenging Shivdhar Reddy’s appointment, the court made it clear that the selection of a Director General of Police must follow Supreme Court guidelines. It instructed the government to submit its response after forwarding the panel to the UPSC. The court adjourned the matter to January 20 for further hearing.

The petition was filed by Hyderabad-based social activist T M Gopal Rao, who questioned the procedure followed by the state government. He argued that the appointment violated the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in 2018.

The petitioner contended that the state should have informed the UPSC at least three months before the previous DGP’s retirement. He said the government failed to submit details regarding the change of police leadership within the stipulated time.

He further argued that the state did not forward a list of eligible and senior IPS officers to the UPSC. According to him, this lapse had resulted in the continued absence of a permanent DGP in Telangana. The High Court said it would examine the matter further after the government complied with its directions.
