School bus accident exposes safety lapses in Malikipuram after Medaram-style warnings
Hyderabad: A major tragedy was narrowly averted on the Antarvedi route in Malikipuram of Dr B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema district after a private school bus rammed into an 11 kV electric pole on Tuesday, triggering fresh concerns over the safety of unfit school buses.
Officials said the accident occurred near Tekishettipalem, when the bus belonging to a private school lost control and struck the live power pole. Although the impact shattered the bus windows, students on board escaped with only minor injuries.
Authorities said the consequences could have been far more severe if the bus had plunged into the nearby canal or caught fire due to an electric shock. They noted that such a scenario could have led to heavy loss of life, given the high-voltage line involved.
Malikipuram school bus incident revives concern over unfit vehicles
Local residents and parents alleged that several private schools continued to operate buses without proper fitness certification, putting students’ lives at risk. They said parents paying high fees were forced to remain anxious until their children returned home safely each day.
Transport department officials said they had already begun seizing school buses found violating norms. They warned that strict action would be taken if any bus without valid fitness certificates was allowed on the roads.
Officials said private school managements must take responsibility for student safety and comply with transport regulations, adding that violations would invite penalties and possible suspension of vehicle permits.
