New Year buzz pushes Hyderabad liquor sales to all-time record

Hyderabad liquor sales hit all-time high in December

Hyderabad: Liquor sales in Hyderabad touched an all-time high in December, driven by New Year celebrations and the festive election season, according to the excise department.

The excise department reported liquor sales worth ₹5,102 crore in December alone. This marked the first time monthly sales crossed the ₹5,000-crore mark in the city. Officials called the figures unprecedented in the department’s history.

Sales peaked on December 31. On that single night, liquor outlets recorded sales of over ₹350 crore amid widespread New Year celebrations. Moreover, demand remained high throughout the final week of the month.

During the last five days of December, liquor sales reached ₹1,344 crore. The figures reflected sustained purchasing ahead of New Year parties and social gatherings.

Hyderabad liquor sales surge amid elections and festivities

Excise officials attributed the surge to the overlap of sarpanch elections and New Year celebrations. According to them, the festive mood and election-related demand drew heavy crowds to liquor outlets across the city.

Newly opened liquor shops also reported brisk business. Shop owners expressed satisfaction with the strong turnout. As a result, higher consumption generated substantial revenue for the state exchequer, the Telangana Excise Department said.

Officials added that December’s sales would remain a milestone in excise history. They said the figures highlight how simultaneous festivities and electoral activity significantly influence liquor consumption patterns in Hyderabad.
