HIV awareness programme held at cable bridge
Hyderabad: The Health Minister participated in an HIV awareness programme held at the Cable Bridge to promote awareness and reduce stigma around the disease.
The event, organised by the Telangana AIDS Control Society, featured a human chain involving officials and participants to spread awareness. The minister said the government is conducting rallies, medical camps, and outreach programmes across the state to educate people about HIV/AIDS.
He explained that HIV weakens the immune system and can progress to AIDS if untreated. He clarified that the virus spreads through unprotected sexual contact and contaminated blood, but not through casual contact such as handshakes, hugging, or sharing food.
The minister stressed that lack of awareness leads to fear, misconceptions, and discrimination. He said people living with HIV must be treated with dignity and equal rights, adding that discrimination is punishable under the HIV & AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017.
HIV awareness programme highlights prevention and care
The minister said medical advancements now allow individuals with HIV to lead long and normal lives with timely testing and treatment. He noted that the government provides free testing, treatment, and medicines across the state.
According to officials, around 1.14 lakh patients are receiving services through 127 testing centres and 33 ART centres. Special screening camps for HIV and tuberculosis are also being conducted in government hospitals and prisons.
He urged youth to avoid drug abuse, particularly injectable drugs, which increase the risk of infection. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for overall well-being.
Senior officials, including Health Secretary Christina Chongthu and other department representatives, attended the programme.
